Bayern are seven points behind league leaders Bayer Leverkusen after their disappointing defeat on the weekend and Tuchel's men will be vying to revive their form and utilise this game in hand to great extent.

Union Berlin, on the other hand, are just three points away from safety as they have a daunting task ahead of them to revive their campaign. A loss against the reigning champions could give Mainz the perfect opportunity to swap places, pushing Berlin to the 18th spot in the table.

The German giants are shorthanded in defence with Moroccan international Noussair Mazraoui representing his nation at the CAF AFCON 2023 and South Korean centre-back Kim Min-Jae strutting his stuff at the AFC Asian Cup 2023.

The injury list for Bayern Munich includes Tarek Buchmann who has a thigh issue, Daniel Peretz who is nursing a knee injury, and the duo of Serge Gnabry and Bouna Sarr who are healing from a hamstring issue and ACL injury, respectively.

Former Spurs employee Harry Kane would continue leading the line for the Bavarians with the talismanic English striker netting 22 goals and bagging 5 assists since his arrival from England this summer.

Union Berlin have just two absentees with Rani Khedira picking up a calf problem and Aissa Laidouni out of contention due to his international commitments with Tunisia.

The German side have released Chelsea's David Datro Fofana who returns to England on a loan deal with Burnley while Sheraldo Becker has switched ships to join Real Sociedad in Spain.

Bayern Munich take on Union Berlin in Bundesliga action on January 24 on the back of a shock weekend defeat at home to Hoffenheim. Thomas Tuchel's side suffered a first loss of 2024 with title rivals Bayer Leverkusen taking full advantage to open up a seven-point lead at the top of the table with a late win at RB Leipzig.

This game is Bayern's match in hand against Xabi Alonso's Bayer Leverkusen and the hosts will be desperate for a win to close the gap. Bayern are still missing German international Serge Gnabry for this game with Kim Min-jae and Noussair Mazraoui absent due to AFC Asian Cup and AFCON 2024 duty. Tuchel could look to reshape his midfield from the loss to Hoffenheim with Leon Goretzka coming in to start.

Midfielder Aissa Laidouni is absent with Tunisia at AFCON 2024 and Union Berlin could stick with an unchanged starting XI following their 0-0 draw at Freiburg.

Bayern Munich are in a strong position to bounce back with a win in this game against a Union Berlin side which has won just two league games since August.

The bigger question is how can Tuchel overhaul Bayer Leverkusen in the coming weeks? Bayern Munich's experience has been their ace card in previous title challenges but Alonso's team continue to impress this season.

Bayern endured a wretched weekend in the Bundesliga as they were beaten at home by Werder Bremen for the first time since 2008. On Saturday, they'd seen league leaders Bayer Leverkusen secure yet another last-gasp victory at RB Leipzig.

As a result, Leverkusen's lead at the summit is seven points before Bayern play their game in hand in midweek.

Union had just parted ways with longtime coach Urs Fischer when this fixture was originally meant to be played, with new boss Nenad Bjelica overseeing a subtle uptick in fortunes. Wednesday's visitors, however, are still flirting with the possibility of succumbing to the second tier just a year after they qualified for the Champions League for the very first time.

Thomas Tuchel has no fresh injury concerns from Sunday's defeat. Matthijs de Ligt overcame an injury worry to start on Sunday, and he should remain in the side on Wednesday.

There's been a general feeling in Munich that Tuchel's side are yet to reach top gear, although it's very much expected that they'll go on a run and usurp Leverkusen at the summit. However, Sunday's showing suggest Bayern are still some way from finding any sort of imperious groove.

Thus, while Union are far from a stellar outfit, they'll be emboldened by Werder's success. They'll aim to contain the hosts and spring in transition, with Bayern likely to surrender chances.

Bayern Munich was defeated in its last game 1-0 against Werder Bremen at home on January 21. Bayern Munich fell short despite outshooting its opponent 18 to six. Leroy Aziz Sane took four shots for goalless Bayern Munich in its match against Werder Bremen.

Union Berlin drew 0-0 on the road against SC Freiburg in its most recent match on January 13, despite being outshot 12 to nine. Josip Juranovic had a team-high three shots in the club’s scoreless effort.
